Are You Keeping Up With Your New Year’s Resolutions?

05 Friday Feb 2016

DSC_1630

It’s the first week of February and it’s staggering what percentage of people give up on their goals within the first 6 weeks of the year!  Clearly I should have made a goal to be more prompt as I’m sitting blogging on Friday morning instead of having this done and completed by Thursday as our usual blog post day.  I’ll ask for forgiveness and tell you that one of my 2016 goals was to get more organized.

As many of you know, I am self employed, which means I have a milling balls in the air all at one time. I’ve read a number of business books, and honestly they all say the same thing. You can’t get anything done without a plan.  So one of my goals this year was to be more intentional. To make a plan, because all work and no play makes Emily a “stressed out, cranky, overwhelmed individual who never does anything fun with her friends to recharge” you know…Dull!

So I wanted to check in and see, what were your resolutions for this year? And are you sticking with them. Today is a great day to go over and read them again. Post them somewhere you can see them at the beginning of the day and the end of the day as a reminder of what you’re working for.  I had a interesting conversation with one of my clients last night where we talked about instant gratification.  He said “Instant gratification is for kids, as adults we have to look for the big gratification at the end of long journey” And it’s true.  There is nothing more exciting then working hard towards a goal, the anticipation, the drive, and then getting there at the end.

So take some time today and review your goals. Set up some new practices if the old ones aren’t working to get you to your goal. Get re-inspired by your life. What are you working so hard for? Don’t get bogged down by the everyday details of your life and stop focusing on your goals.  If you didn’t make any goals for New Years, it’s never too late to start. Start small, something that only takes you a couple days or weeks to accomplish. It doesn’t have to be big. Little goals towards a bigger goal go a long way.

We’d love to hear your goals! Share with us, let us help you keep on track! If you’re goal is to be a little more fashionable this year. Or to donate those clothes that you’ve been hanging on to since high school but you need to clean out your closet and that’s an undertaking.  Or, I swear S’s goal is to buy a pair of shoes for every day of the year! One of my major goals is to get strong this year. Lifting weights is so critical to keeping yourself fit as you get older. Honestly so many things “hurt” in my 30’s that I never thought about in my 20’s. I want to maintain a strong and healthy body this year. That’s one of my goals, among many!

Cheers and happy friday! Share with us what you’re goals are and if you’re staying on track!

OOTD: When you get stuck in a foreign country!

25 Monday Jan 2016

Em and I (S) tend to travel together. We have has some wonderful adventures over the years, and this year brough us to the beautiful lands of Costa Rica!

While the trip has been amazing, the country is beautiful, out homelands in the USA have been getting hammered with snow, resulting with us, more so S the Em, getting suck here for a few extra days until we can fly home!

So how do you dress when you find yourself stuck in a tropical climate for a few extra days? If you are S, it’s a romper of course!

Opt for a light fabric with lace trim to bring in this years trend of intimate inspired wear!

Safe travels, and check back on Thurdsy for an article about how what to do when your flights are canceled and you are literally stuck in a foreign country!

Safe travels!

How to Pull Off an Amazing Wine Advent

17 Thursday Dec 2015

12359900_10109867652512154_9015165102169760877_nI love wine! After spending a semester studying abroad in Rome, I developed a healthy interest in Wine! It apparently runs in my family (on my mom’s side) and last year we started a new tradition: Wine down to Christmas!  The rules are fairly simple!

  1. There are 8 of us this year, so every person gets 3 nights.
  2. On your night, you must share a wine of your choice on Facebook
  3. You cannot repeat any wine previously shared

Since these are the only “real” rules, there is a lot of variety in which everyone shares what they liked, what it tastes like, what it pairs well with, what it costs, and the backdrop for sharing the image. This is a really fun way to share our wine choices, try something new, set up a time to drink some wine with friends, or simply have an excuse to buy a bottle of wine. Our family loves to do this, so here are a few of the selections from this year so far!

  1. Carnelian: Pinot Noir $12/bottle according to the author, hints of cherries and raspberries
  2. Marietta Cellars: Old Vine Red $13/bottle, was fantastic
  3. Root 1: Cabernet Sauvignon $10/bottle, was very acidic and the author does not like cherries so she gave it a thumbs down
  4. French Bordeaux Reserve Special Domaines Barons De Rothschild 13.99/bottle. Went great with tenderloin
  5. Sensi Collezione, bought in FL price unknown, bold and fruit forward
  6. Handcraft: Petite Sirah, $10/bottle, thumbs up from the author
  7. Bully Hill: Baco Noir – this was mine. I recently moved to Rochester NY, so I’ve been all over the Finger Lakes Breweries.  As a red wine fan, I’ve been a little disappointed that the whites are better then the reds here.  However, this spicy red was great! $8.99 It’s totally affordable!12310409_10109832194230834_23571172534796325_n
  8. Steven Kent Winery: Cabernet Sauvignon $12/bottle
  9. Apothic White $10.99/bottle. Smooth and fruity but this author likes the red better and said it was not her favorite
  10. Vigneti Del Salento: Muri Primitivo Puglia, was given as a gift, said to be a nice red wine and research shows roughly $15/bottle
  11. Michael Pozzan: Annabella, this author had this wine out at dinner and said it was excellent
  12. Santa Margherita: Pino Grigio (no notes)
  13. Apothic Red: California $10/bottle. This is a great everyday red
  14. Ritchie Vineyards: Red Car, this was accompanied by a very funny story about spelling her name wrong for years!
  15. Casa Larga: Vidal Blanc – Another Finger Lakes Wine share from me, and I love this white! I could drink the whole bottle myself, it’s a great everyday wine. I promise, I shared with my husband! 12241277_10109867652582014_7557113040967639858_nReally this is just a great way to connect with family – we all live in different areas and can’t get together to share a bottle of wine. If you were doing this with your friends who live close by I would definitely plan a few nights to share the wine together!

Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

Cheers! xoxo ~ Em

Popular this season is the dress over turtle neck look, monochromatic themes and velvet.  Today we are showing S in a velvet dress, with velvet shoes and turtleneck under her dress.  This is a great way to take your sleeveless dresses into the winter months.  Chose dresses with deep “V” neck, wide shoulders, and heavier fabric. We loved the idea of monochromatic so we choses shoes and a turtle neck that were in the same color palette as the velvet dress!

Happy Monday! ~ xoxo Em

5 Things to Buy Your Sewing Lover for Christmas

10 Thursday Dec 2015

Tags

christmas pajamas, diy, diy fashion, diy pajamas, diy sewing, fashion, fashion blog, fashion blogger, pajama bottoms, pajamas, serger, sewing, sewing christmas pjs, sewing for christmas, sewing lovers, sewing machine, sewing pajama pants, sewing scissors, what ever sewer needs, what every sewer must have, what every sewer needs, what to buy your sewing lover for christmas, what to get a woman for christmas, what to get a young girl for christmas, What to get for christmas, Where to start when sewing

So i’m in the midst of what I call “Operation Christmas Pajamas” and I’m grateful for all the sewing gadget I have collected over the years that makes this project so much easier!  A little background on the project: Approximately 7 years ago I started making Christmas pajamas for my two nieces.  It was a tradition my mom started with my sister and I as kids. She didn’t make our PJ’s but she let us open our new Christmas PJ’s on Christmas Eve. It was the only thing we were allowed to open, but we got new PJ’s and it’s a memory i’ll always treasure. So when my second niece came along I decided to start making the kids Christmas PJ’s because I love to sew!  Fast forward 7 years and I now have 6 nieces and nephews! Phew, so what was once a fun little project has now become an “operation” but I love every minute of it, even the parts with my seam ripper when you’ve torn it apart six times and still haven’t gotten it right. (Seriously my best friend – the seam ripper) And my oldest niece who is 10 didn’t fail to mention when she saw me last, that the only gift they get to open on Christmas Eve is PJ’s from Auntie Em! I love that they love this tradition too!

If you’re new to sewing and want to try it out I highly recommend starting with PJ pants! Possibly the easiest thing you’ll ever sew! And if you mess them up a little, no one will ever see them!

So here is my list of must haves!

1st: Fiskars Easy Action Scissors, your sewing lover will absolutely love these! When you’re cutting out a lot of pieces your hands get tired and cramped. These little babies make cutting a breeze. But make sure your sewing lover hides them! They are amazing and they are for cutting fabric and sewing only! Don’t use them for everyday use, dull scissors are the worst!

2nd: That little pin cushion you see above is magnetic! One of my best friends bought both of these for me a couple years ago for Christmas. Her mom is a avid sewer and said they were must haves! She wasn’t lying! Seriously, you just wave it over you pins and it picks them all up! I even wave it over the floor to make sure I haven’t missed any that got away when I was sewing! And it’s so much easier to pick them up from this little disc then a box or a standard pin cushion that really requires 2 hands!

3rd: This one is a bit of a splurge, but it’s worth every penny. Seriously, if you are going to be sewing clothing, especially for children, buy a serger! This little puppy rolls hems, overlocks stitches, cuts seam allowances and generally cleans everything up. But what’s great, the really best part about it, is that it really keeps seams from unravelling. So when you are making things for kids, and it’s going to get washed a million times, this is a must have!

Little side note about the serger! I heard a woman recently say: buy thread and then never unthread it.  So you’ll notice i’ve included the “wiring” diagram and you can see the fact that my serger is loaded with hot pink! Personally I don’t think it’s that hard to thread, it’s a pain, but it’s manageable.  However, the things you are going to serge are never going to be seen (with the exception of rolled hems) so if you’re someone that looks at the threading diagram and grimaces, pick a signature color, like hot pink, and make your seams your statement!  Seriously I started with hot pink because I wanted to do a rolled hem on one of the girls clothing pieces and I’ve never looked back. My oldest nephew is 3, he doesn’t know to care that his jammies have pink seams! (looks red to me)

Sewing Christmas Ideas 2015-0382

4th: Buy a good sewing machine. You can get them for a good price, even if your sewer is young and just learning. Don’t buy the kids learning sewing machine when you can get a real one for just a little bit more. If they really like it, that sewing machine will follow them around for ages. S even bought a vintage machine. Between the two of us, we have 3 machines and 2 sergers, and 2 dress mannequins

Sewing Christmas Ideas 2015-0377

5th: A great sewing table! You can see my sewing table above. It would originally have had a sewing machine that sat on top, or folded down in to the table. (my mom has one that folds down, so cool!) But this one my mom and I found at an antique shop, little did they know i’d actually use it as a sewing table. The round gears and the bar on the bottom would have propelled the sewing machine like my foot pedal does now. But really, it’s important to have a good table to work on. Something that doesn’t rock or shake! And if you have a sewing room, a large pub height table to cut patterns on is ideal. I don’t have a tall table so I cut my patterns on the floor! Not ideal! And after cutting out 6 kids pi’s my back and shoulders are telling me I’m not as young as I used to be!

I hope this helps you decide to become a sewer, or helps with what to buy someone who already is a sewer! S and I love to sew, it’s just kind of this thing we do!

Have a wonderful holiday season! Cheers and blessings to you all!

xoxo ~ Em

If you wanted to implement the window pane print, and weren’t quite sure how, well here is a cost effective way to add a popular style to your wardrobe! We previously showed you the window pane print in a wrap dress, check out our archives for that look. Here we paired the window pane print with the car wash pleat and a great pair of go to black booties! In this style, S is ready for the office, or she can throw off the jacket and pair it with a silky shirt for a night out on the town!

Sadly it’s getting cold! And who says you can’t wear white after labor day! We think white screams winter, so we paired white pants, with white pumps, and a white beret! It’s cold, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look great! To bump up the wow factor, we added a faux fur purse. The fuzzy purse is in this season, it’s something you can pick up cheap, and adds a lot of sass to your winter wardrobe!

OOTD: Patchwork

23 Monday Nov 2015

Sorry Stylish Two Fans! Em, in her infinite wisdom, forgot the cord to her laptop in Maine! But we are back up and running. A little late, but not forgotten!

2015 October Patchwork Skirt-0088

Today’s post is all about the patchwork skirt! You’ve seen this style out and about, but here’s S showing you how to wear it! We loved the patchwork in a suede mini, and paired down the wild pattern with a creamy sweater and chunky shoes! We hope you love it!

You guys, fall is here! In Rochester you could even say Winter has come! I’m in denial on that one just yet, but lets talk fall, leather, midi skirts, fall colors…

So outfit of the day this week – leather!  Who doesn’t love a leather skirt in the fall when the wind it getting a little cool.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-40

As seen here, S is pairing this fall green leather midi skirt with a simple lace appliqué top taking leather to the workplace, or just out for a date night with friends.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-47

We’ve put away all our summer sandals for a much needed rest, and broken out the wedges, closed toes, and booties for fall.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-48

Don’t forget your bling. The thing that takes an okay outfit to a great outfit is the accessories.  Here we went with a neutral shoe and a long necklace. Since the skirt is leather and the shirt has lace trim, you don’t want to overwhelm the outfit with lots of different pieces. Choose carefully to have a classy look. Sometimes there is such a thing as too much, so keep it simple, classy, and you can’t go wrong.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-46

Until next week! xoxo ~ Em and S
