Is It Better to Walk or Run?

12 Thursday Nov 2015

active, activity, being active, five-factor diet, get in shape, health, improve your overall health, Is it better to walk or run, is running better then walking, running, running vs walking, setting goals 2016, should I run, sneakers, staying healthy, walking

Nikefree

I’ve been doing a lot or research lately as I try to get my fitness lifestyle back on track. If you’re a long time follower of our blog, you know that S & I did a cleanse in the fall of last year and were hitting the gym hard!  Well after a whirlwind trip to the Dominican where we ate and drank whatever we wanted, it was hard to get back on track when life set in again.  I mean, let’s be honest, if our fitness isn’t made a priority it’s one of the first things we let go of when we get busy!

So i’ve been reading a series of articles like this one: Is it Better to Walk or Run where they talk about outcome!  If you’re like me, you’re probably trying to shed some extra pounds.  Some studies have been done that suggest that you can burn the same number of calories, walking or running, but the after burn from running and the decrease in the calorie cravings often help runners lose and maintain BMI and waistline.

However: “If your goal is exercising for overall health and to improve your longevity, then walking is ideal,” James O’Keefe.  In this article: How Walking is Healthier Than Running, the author, O’Keefe, suggests that the intense level of exercising has different effects on your body and maintains that moving into a less aggressive approach for the long term is a better model for longevity.  So if you’ve hit your weight loss goals or your comfortable with your weight, then the intensity of your workouts doesn’t need to be on screech.  If you’re training for a marathon, well that’s just a different story.

What i’ve learned over the last couple of years, is that you need to lift weights.  Women particularly. I’ve walked the 50 mile challenge walk in Cape Cod for MS Research for the last three years.  The first year I was lifting, walking, and going to the gym 3-5 days per week and I felt great. I little tightness in my legs from over-use, but no lasting effects.  The second year I walked, I wasn’t doing any lifting, but I was walking my dogs 4 miles a day, every day, and doing long 8,10,12 mile walks on the weekends. My IT band hurt for 6 months after the walk that year. This year, I wasn’t walking hardly at all and I started my weight lifting a little late, 12 weeks before the walk. Although my legs were strong, my feet and arms paid the price of overuse after having done very little walking.

So what i’m saying: Is walking better then running, well that completely depends on the outcome you’re looking for.  One of the plans I love to follow is the 5-factor diet. It’s a lifestyle and exercise plan. I say lifestyle, because the word diet has a really bad taste in most peoples mouths.  There are 5 factor that should be in every meal you eat, you should eat 5 times a day, and you should exercise 5 days a week, and you should do 5 activities while at the gym: cardio warm up, 2 lifting exercises, abs, cardio (5-30 minutes). You can learn more about Harley Pasternak and the 5 factors HERE! I know i’ve talked about him before, but even he suggests that maybe running isn’t best for everyone.

And lets face it, other then the people who actually like to run, the rest of us do it to stay in shape or because we think we have to, begrudging it the whole time. So maybe you don’t really have to run. Just a thought!

But if you do want to run, I love the C25K app on my iPhone! Couch to 5K in 9 weeks! Start small and build your way up, it takes forever to get in shape, but if you build on it a little bit at at time, you’ll do great!

Have a great week! ~ Em

How to instantly look better with exercises to improve your posture

Poor posture can affect a lot of aspects of your life.  If can give you headaches, neck pain, and actually cause permanent changes in your body’s flexibility!

Another side effect from poor posture is how it makes you look.  You look shorter, insecure, and make all your clothes look like they don’t fit you.  You look shorter, your chest looks smaller, and you look 10lbs heavier!

postureSo what can we do about it?

  1. Watch how you stand.  Its really easy to slouch, especially where we spend so much time hunched over technology these days.  Every time you catch yourself, pull your shoulders back, and pull in your stomach so you use more of your core muscles.
  2. Keep that core strong!  Your back needs a little something to support it.
  3. Stretch.  Stand in a doorway with an arm on either side of the door frame and lean your weight forward so your stretch your chest and pull your shoulder back.

If you follow our blog, you know Em is our resident photographer.  That’s why, more often then not, you see photos of S taken by Em.  Every year, typically in the fall, Em’s family get’s together and takes some family photos!  So here are some tips and tricks from Em on how to get a great family photo!
2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9647

First: Pick a color scheme.  It’s not a happy accident that we somewhat coordinate in our photos! I know it may sound silly, you don’t have to all dress alike, but having a pallet really makes your photos go the extra mile! This year, since plaid is in and our location was fall foliage, we went with Red, Navy, Plaid, and cream. If your family is anything like mine – you need to pick something easy for the men.  Jeans and plaid shirts were something that all our husbands already had!2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9737

Two: Pick a great location! Doing something interesting with the photo to catch your eye always makes a better photograph!  In this photo we are right justified and there is emphasis payed to the line of the railroad track. Setting the boca on your camera to give a softness to the background also allows the people in the photo to take precedence over a somewhat busy background.

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9696

Three: Photography with kids can always be a little challenging! This little lady was in a pretty good mood while we did our photoshoot, but it’s really important to take a lot of pictures and engage the child. Ask them questions, get them excited.  Sometimes just telling them to smile rewards you with the photo below!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9836

They aren’t little models – so try to have fun with them. Engage them, make the exercise fun!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9773

Then you end up with fun photos like this sweet one. The sun rises and sets on her Pawpaw, and she’s the apple of his eye. These two are inseparable!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9774

If you want to get creative, take your camera to a different level.  So many people get caught up taking pictures from standing height. But some of the best shots might come from laying down or climbing up! So explore new heights!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9712

Don’t be afraid to use the sun!  Sometimes taking pictures with the sun streaming through make the most beautiful and whispy photos! Don’t be afraid to try something new! Natural sunlight is your friend, learn how to use it to your advantage!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9662

Have fun! Because a photo shoot is just like every other part of your life, it’s about capturing the memories! We will never be in this same time, or this same age. A photo should express the real personality behind the subjects. Leave staging to someone else!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9701

And don’t forget your fur-babies. I have yet to master the art of getting them to both look at the camera at the same time. I call this a win because they are both facing forward.

Until next time! Enjoy this little slice of heaven that I call my family!

xoxo ~ Em

How to Pack Your Purse Like a Pro

Pack Your Purse Like a Pro

We all do it. Stuff our bags so full of useless stuff—like old receipts, gum wrappers and 19 shades of lipstick, that it seems like what we really need is never easily at our finer tips. Or worse yet, your try to minimize, only to feel like you never have what you need. So here it is of items to keep in your purse that make you feel like the fantastically stylish and confident women that we all are.

Your Wallet

Okay, okay, this one is pretty obvious, right? But it all starts here. Make sure you have a quality wallet that you love, and have everything you need in. Always carry your ID, a credit/debit card and a little cash. I carry a pretty big wallet because I still write checks regularly, and keeping it with me always makes my life so much easier! (I know, I’m living in the past!). Don’t skip the cash either—those rare times when plastic currency isn’t accepted you will be the envy of everyone searching for an ATM.

Your Planner

Whatever you use, it only actually works if you keep it with you—so carry it everywhere. If you use your smartphone, then it works double duty. If you find yourself need to write it down on paper (I’m old school, so this is me, I love my lists!), then get one in a size that is functional for your desired purse size.

Emergency Beauty Kit

In a small cosmetic bag, always keep a small tube of concealer, face powder with a mirror in the compact, a hair tie, and bobby pins. Its just enough to tide you over when your look really needs some help. Keep a nail file around for those broken nails.  While you are at it, throw in a band-aid for the occasional paper cut or blister from that fantastic new pair of shoes and a safety pin for fashion emergencies.

Tinted Lip Balm

The way to keep you bag minimal, while still effective to keep the items small and multitask when you can. Tinted lip balm is my go to product. There are a million kinds available these days, so find a shade that is neutral and flattering on you. It will keep your lips kissably soft, while giving you a hint of color. Perfect for day to day and those occasions when you forget to bring your lipstick choice of the day with you.

A Healthy Snack

The modern women lives a busy life! Sometimes you don’t have time for anything other than coffee before running out the door, a meeting runs late, or you get stuck in traffic. Having a healthy snack can be a lifesaver.

Mints

Every girl needs a way to fix your coffee breath or freshen up before a date. Gum does the trick, but there is something much more chic about mints.

Your Pain Reliever of Choice

Let’s face it, the world gives you headaches. Instead of letting it spoil your day or trying to bum something from a friend, be the one who can save the day.

Hand Sanitizing Wiper

Wipes make it easier to more thoroughly clean your hands, and they work to clean other items as well.

Fine Point Sharpie

Narrow enough to use as a pen, including writing on difficult surfaces, and leaves a permanent mark when you need it.

Hand Lotion

Especially necessary in the winter when the air is extra dry! Flaking skin and cracking skin never attractive. Lotion can also tame frizzy hair in a pinch.

A few great additions…..

A Small Notebook

Okay, so if you use a paper planner, this one is really optional—but having a way to actually write things down can be a life saver. Make your shopping list, to do lists, or notes to yourself. Tear off a sheet when you need to give someone your contact information. Write down dates that should be in your iPhone planner when it inevitably dies mid-afternoon. Especially if you are a visual person, these are essential, and you can find them the size of a note card for only a few dollars!

Portable Phone Charger

We use of phones for everything these days. They are amazing multipurpose devices….but, they also have a limited battery life. If you tend to use your phone a lot, it’s completely worth investing in one of these.

Body Conscious: How To Avoid Looking Heavier in Your Wardrobe

2015 fashion, belted dresses, belted waist, boyfriend jeans, chunky shoes, dark was jeans, dark wash, diagonal stripes, heels, high heels, hourglass figure, how to look skinnier, shapeless dress

Let’s face it.  Everyone is a little conscious of how their body looks.  So for those of you who are worried about that extra 10lbs you feel you put on this summer while indulging in sweet treats and ice cream, here are a few tips to transition into fall and help you feel better in your wardrobe!

Avoid the chunky shoe:

I’m sorry to say it ladies, the chunky shoe might be popular right now, but if you are at all worried about feeling chunky – avoid the chunky shoe. Making your ankles and feet appear bigger then they are, does nothing for slimming your legs and giving you an air of elegance. Chunky shoes make you look heavier, they make you walk heavier, and they don’t make you feel sexy. So even though it’s trendy, skip them this season.

4th of July OutiftStylishTwoPostADayInMay-2051

Stay away from shapeless dresses

So the trends this year are a little “sloppy”. The shirt dress, and shapeless shift dress are popular, but if you’re conscious of those extra pounds, then wearing a shapeless shirt or dress just adds weight to your frame. If you’re really into the style, grab a belt and cinch it under your bust, or at the waist to draw the eyes to the narrowest part of your body and give you that great hourglass shape. As we move into fall and the weather starts to get cooler, a great button down sweater with a belt at the waist will add style and not add pounds.

Belted Dress

Hold off on purchasing or wearing clothing that is too tight

I know it’s exciting to tell yourself you’re down a size. It makes all of us think twice about buying a piece of clothing that’s just a little too tight. Unfortunately, the “feel good” part of getting into a smaller size doesn’t translate to how it looks on you. Clothing that is too tight hangs funny and attracts the eyes to the areas where it squeezes your flesh. Don’t get trapped in the “size matters” mindset. It really doesn’t! A great piece that fits right and looks fantastic on you goes so much farther then the size label. The only one who can see the size label is you. With the wide swing in sizing of women’s clothing, just forget about the number altogether and get something that fits. Our bodies are so different, don’t be afraid to go up a size in something great, and have it tailored to fit! You’re tailor is a great investment in you feeling great about yourself! When you go out smiling, and you know you look good, everyone else will think you look great too!

Buy your boyfriend jeans in a darker wash

So boyfriend jeans are in this year, and in their nature, they are a little baggier. To avoid feeling heavy in your jeans, go with a darker wash. Darker washes are slimming. So there’s no need to throw this trend aside, just make sure when you’re out shopping, that you remember color makes a world of difference.

Jeans-7423

Go for the oversized bag

As an Architect, I fully understand this concept. We use the idea of scale to trick our minds into thinking and feeling a certain way. People love to walk down city streets with overhangs and large shop windows. Why? Because it’s related to our “human” scale – as opposed to those streets with the towering high-rises that make you feel like an ant. The same thing applies to your accessories, and most importantly, your bags! If you’re feeling a little overweight, carry a large bag. Large bags will make you look smaller. Small bags make you look heavy.  Or if you’re a tiny slip of a girl, consider a medium to small bag so you don’t get lost in your oversized bag and oversized sunglasses – looking like you went to play dress up in you’re mom’s closet. Scale matters! So go big and go bold if you’re feeling a little self conscious!

The shirt dress, a popular trend this spring! Pair it with an unexpected belt, floral bag, and a pop of color with your wedges.

Wear diagonal stripes

So I think we have all heard the fashion advice – not to wear horizontal stripes. But if you want to look thinner – wear diagonal stripes.  We love this dress from Ann Taylor that directs the eye to the thinest part of your body and makes you look like you have the craziest skinny hourglass. It’s classy, its vibrant, and it makes you look so much thinner! So go for the diagonal stripes this year!

I hope these tips were just a little bit helpful!

Beat the Frizz: 5 Things Every Girl With Curly Hair Should Know!

06 Thursday Aug 2015

Tags

conditioned hair, curly hair, curly hairstyle, fashion, fashionblog, fashionblogger, hair, hairstyle, summer hair, tips for curly hair

As you’ve seen in the blog – Em has a wild mane of curly hair! So here are a few tips she’s learned over the years to beat the frizz and keep that curly hair looking soft and beautiful.

StylishTwoPostADayInMay-2009

  1. Skip the Wash – Okay, so i’m not asking to you to be dirty and not take a shower! Curly hair needs the natural oils from our scalp that shampoo can strip away. So massage your scalp with conditioner when you shower, but keep the shampoo to every other wash. The first thing I do when I hop in the shower is lather my hair with conditioner, I let it set in my hair while I do the rest of my wash, and rinse the conditioner out at the very end, letting my hair get as much condition as possible. Important tip: put the conditioner in from the bottom of your hair up. You can take a wide tooth comb in the shower with you and work your way up your hair by entering the condoner at the bottom and slowly combing upwards, or just use your fingers to pull the conditioner through your hair. That way you condition the ends of your hair and add less weight to the healthy hair at your scalp.
  2. Wide tooth comb – only when wet – seriously, this goes out to all of you ladies out there with curly hair who had a mom with straight hair – throw out that brush!! I’m not gonna lie, at 33 my mom (with stick straight hair) still asks me if i’m going to comb my hair before we go out! My favorite response is “You think it looks bad now, let me go comb it” But really, that brush should just go in the trash! If you think your hair was frizzy before, run a brush through it and see what happens! In all seriousness though, when you get out of the shower, apply your product to the ends of your hair, and then run your wide tooth comb through to spread the product evenly around. So many times we start at the top of our head, which weighs down the curls at the base of the scalp and leaves very little product at the ends which get frayed and frizzy very quickly. If you notice your hair start to get frizzy, don’t try to add more product to tame it, touching your hair as it dries just makes it more frizzy. Start over, wet, conditioner, wide tooth comb from the base. Which leads me to my next point.
  3. Don’t touch! – Everyone always sees those beautiful ads where the model is running her fingers through her hair! Resist the temptation! The more you touch your hair as it dries, the more it will frizz.  So get out of the shower, throw some product in your hair, a couple of scrunches, and then don’t touch it for the rest of the day!
  4. Alcohol, sulfate, and paraben free! – Trust me on this one, at 33 I have grey hair! Yikes! So I see my hair dresser approximately every 6-8 weeks. She trims the ends of my curly hair (a must to prevent the triangle hairstyle) and gives my roots a lift. My skin tone actually looks good with red – so I add copper to my hair. When I come to see her after 2 months, she is always amazed at how healthy my hair is, and how well the color stayed in, since red fades the fastest. She is definitely attributing this to the organic shampoo I use. Alcohol dries out your hair, and the waxy stuff they put in many shampoo and conditioners prevent your hair from actually absorbing the conditioning. It just creates a waxy surface on the outside. And those parabens (preservatives) tend to do more damage then good. It’s great that the shelf life of your conditioner is years beyond when you’ll use it, but the damaging effects to hair aren’t worth the savings when you buy cheap conditioner. Ladies – we have curly hair – your conditioner is your best friend to fight the frizz!
  5. Skip the straightener – The straightener not only dries out your hair, adding to the frizz, but it has a tendency to change the bounce and volume of your curls. If I want a straight do (because seriously we all have those days) I wait until I go see my stylist. One, she has a much better straightener, two, she’s going to use product in my hair to keep it conditioned and reduce the frizz, three – she can see the back of my head. That one part of your hair that never looks as good as the rest because you’re arms don’t reach back there and you can’t really see it! I let it straight for about 3 days after she straightens it, so that the natural oils in my hair can regenerate the curls, and I enjoy being a straight haired girl for a couple days! Running my fingers through my hair, checking out the awesome highlights she just put in, and knowing that I didn’t add any damage to my hair on my own. No burnt hair, no over drying, no cheap products, and no damage to the volume or shape of my curls.

Emily5

So I leave you with these words of wisdom, things I wish I would have known during my awkward high school years. Even into my twenties. Now, as a professional, I don’t want my wild mane of hair to be what people are focused on when they meet with me. The longer it gets, the harder it is to maintain that carefree soft curl look. So I hope these tips and tricks have helped, even just a little!

xoxo ~ Em
