How to Pull Off an Amazing Wine Advent

12359900_10109867652512154_9015165102169760877_nI love wine! After spending a semester studying abroad in Rome, I developed a healthy interest in Wine! It apparently runs in my family (on my mom’s side) and last year we started a new tradition: Wine down to Christmas!  The rules are fairly simple!

  1. There are 8 of us this year, so every person gets 3 nights.
  2. On your night, you must share a wine of your choice on Facebook
  3. You cannot repeat any wine previously shared

Since these are the only “real” rules, there is a lot of variety in which everyone shares what they liked, what it tastes like, what it pairs well with, what it costs, and the backdrop for sharing the image. This is a really fun way to share our wine choices, try something new, set up a time to drink some wine with friends, or simply have an excuse to buy a bottle of wine. Our family loves to do this, so here are a few of the selections from this year so far!

  1. Carnelian: Pinot Noir $12/bottle according to the author, hints of cherries and raspberries
  2. Marietta Cellars: Old Vine Red $13/bottle, was fantastic
  3. Root 1: Cabernet Sauvignon $10/bottle, was very acidic and the author does not like cherries so she gave it a thumbs down
  4. French Bordeaux Reserve Special Domaines Barons De Rothschild 13.99/bottle. Went great with tenderloin
  5. Sensi Collezione, bought in FL price unknown, bold and fruit forward
  6. Handcraft: Petite Sirah, $10/bottle, thumbs up from the author
  7. Bully Hill: Baco Noir – this was mine. I recently moved to Rochester NY, so I’ve been all over the Finger Lakes Breweries.  As a red wine fan, I’ve been a little disappointed that the whites are better then the reds here.  However, this spicy red was great! $8.99 It’s totally affordable!12310409_10109832194230834_23571172534796325_n
  8. Steven Kent Winery: Cabernet Sauvignon $12/bottle
  9. Apothic White $10.99/bottle. Smooth and fruity but this author likes the red better and said it was not her favorite
  10. Vigneti Del Salento: Muri Primitivo Puglia, was given as a gift, said to be a nice red wine and research shows roughly $15/bottle
  11. Michael Pozzan: Annabella, this author had this wine out at dinner and said it was excellent
  12. Santa Margherita: Pino Grigio (no notes)
  13. Apothic Red: California $10/bottle. This is a great everyday red
  14. Ritchie Vineyards: Red Car, this was accompanied by a very funny story about spelling her name wrong for years!
  15. Casa Larga: Vidal Blanc – Another Finger Lakes Wine share from me, and I love this white! I could drink the whole bottle myself, it’s a great everyday wine. I promise, I shared with my husband! 12241277_10109867652582014_7557113040967639858_nReally this is just a great way to connect with family – we all live in different areas and can’t get together to share a bottle of wine. If you were doing this with your friends who live close by I would definitely plan a few nights to share the wine together!

Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

Cheers! xoxo ~ Em

Instead of reaching for for 10th cup of coffee this morning, try making yourself a Matcha smoothie to give yourself a healthier energy boost!  Matcha is finely ground high quality green tea, and by consuming the entire leaf in your smoothie, you really get all its wonderful benefits!

Ingredients
1 cup vanilla almond milk
1tsp matcha
1 scoop protein powder

Blend well, and enjoy.

Yep, its that easy!  Matcha is not sweet–so feel free to add honey to taste.  Also, consider added powdered greens for an extra healthy kick!

Never heard of matcha?  Well, if you are a green tea fan, this powder is an easy way to get more of its super food benefits into your daily life!

Enjoy!

cocktail, cosmo, girlie cocktail, how to make, recipe, whipped vodka

Em and I have a bad history with Cosmos.  It all started one very hot summer eventing, and I was a little too obsessed with Sex and the City.  We ordered a few Cosmos at a fancy French restaurant, and both ended up with a horrific hangover that felt like it lasted for days.

A few years later, we are trying to explore new horizons…and tackling a Cosmo that didn’t bring back nightmares was one of them.  In comes the Whipped Cosmo! So use up that leftover Whipped Vodka from last week’s Blue Breeze, and try this delicious drink!

Summer Cocktail Whipped Cosmo

Whipped Cosmo
1.5 oz Whipped Vodka
1.5 oz Cranberry Juice
0.5 oz Triple Sec (or other orange liquor)

First, add the 1.5 oz Vodka

First, measure out the Whipped Vodka and Blue Curacao into a shaker with ice, and gently shake.  Unless you want an explosion, do not add the soda at this time!Summer Cocktail Series - Blue Breeze

Strain into your glass, over ice.  We made a double batch in the shaker and measured, but feel free to just pour!Summer Cocktail Series - Blue Breeze

Weekend Cocktail: Rhubarb Fizz

Summers always calls for a good cocktail.  While I love a great summer ale, gin always becomes a summer favorite for me, as well as anything with bubbles in it (bring on the champagne please!).  Also, in the spring, my rhubarb, which is a perennial, is always thing to sprout up in my garden.  For these reasons, when a Rhubarb Fizz Cocktail, from the blog Baked Bree, popped up on my pintrest, I had to try it!  Of course, I made some alterations, and here is how it turned out for me!

Ingredients
9 oz Rhubarb syrup
8 oz Gin
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
12 oz cold sparkling white wine
ice &  lemon slices for garnish

First, make rhubarb syrup.

rhubarbfizz1

1 Cup Water
1 cup Sugar
1tsp vanilla (Baked Bree uses a vanilla bean, but I didn’t have any!)
1 1/4 cup chopped rhubarb.

rhubarbfizz2

Put all the ingredients into a small pot, and bring to a boil.  Boil for 3 minutes.

rhubarbfizz3

Carefully strain into a jar….perhaps using a funnel, or a wider bottled jar than I did! I made a bit of a mess at first…And let you syrup chill

Finally, make your drink!

Mix the entire jar of homemade rhubarb syrup with the remaining ingredients above, and enjoy!rhubarbfizz4

I found this drink to be an amazing summer cocktail!  Not too sweet, and so refreshing!  So maybe make an extra batch, because it certainly will not last long!
