What To Do For A Little Girl Turning 10!

2015, birthday adventure, birthday fashion, confidence, confidently wearing whatever you want, fun night out, funky outfits, goodwill date night, goodwill fashion, goodwill fun, green pants, independent women, lime green skirt, pink pants, pink stripes, sequins, skirt or dress, sparkly top, stripes, western vest, what to do with 10 year old girls

“Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends.” Kate Spade

I have 4 nieces and 2 nephews, and rarely do I find that they remember what toy or trinket I bought them.  So a few years ago I started to do “birthday” adventures with the kids.  We had a pool party, we’ve been to the circus, and the children’s museum among other things.  This year my oldest niece turned 10, and I wanted share with her confidence, fun, and being yourself! And so the adventure begins!

I asked my niece to pick a friend that she would like to bring on her adventure.  They were each given a party bag with 4 labeled envelopes.  They were only allowed to open 1 at a time!

#1 – Hair

October 2015-0147

Let’s be honest, when you’re having a good hair day, you feel like you can conquer the world!  So I took the ladies to a family friend who is a hair stylist and she curled and styled their hair!

#2 – The Outfit

October 2015-0134

The rules for the outfit – each girl was given $10 to pick an outfit for the other at Goodwill.  They were supposed to wear whatever the other one picked for the rest of the night.  Confidence is about owning what you’re wearing.  If you carry yourself with confidence, others will see you as stylish!  The girls had a great time picking out outfits for each other and then S and I.  They tried on a million thing (as they said) and vetoed a ton – but they had fun, and that was the whole point. (check out S and I below, i’m totally rocking the lime green, orange stripe, sequins top look!)

#3 – The photoshoot

October 2015-0130 October 2015-0128

Then we did a photoshoot in their outfits! Something to always remember this moment. A moment, captured in time.  They will remember this adventure, and now they have a photo to reminisce with years later! Doing a photo shoot with kids should always be fun! So we added mustaches and captured their fun outfits at the same time!

#4 – Eat

October 2015-0139

It’s not just about doing a photo shoot in your crazy outfit.  It’s about going out in public and showing people you are confident!  So we ended our night with dinner, because we were hungry, and because it was a display that we are confident and independent women!

So I apologize for not getting our blog post up on Thursday – but we were doing something special and I wanted to tell you all about it!

Until next week! xoxo ~ Em

Fringe is big this year, and it looks like the trend is going to continue.  Don’t think that fringe is limited to the western look of suede fringe though.  Fringe has a classier side.  This crochet overlay on this dress and long multi-tonal fringe gives it a classy look perfect for any evening event.  I paired it with a lace up pump to give it a little edge!fringe-dress-lace-pumps1 fringe-dress-lace-pumps2 fringe-dress-lace-pumps3

If you follow our blog, you know Em is our resident photographer.  That’s why, more often then not, you see photos of S taken by Em.  Every year, typically in the fall, Em’s family get’s together and takes some family photos!  So here are some tips and tricks from Em on how to get a great family photo!
2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9647

First: Pick a color scheme.  It’s not a happy accident that we somewhat coordinate in our photos! I know it may sound silly, you don’t have to all dress alike, but having a pallet really makes your photos go the extra mile! This year, since plaid is in and our location was fall foliage, we went with Red, Navy, Plaid, and cream. If your family is anything like mine – you need to pick something easy for the men.  Jeans and plaid shirts were something that all our husbands already had!2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9737

Two: Pick a great location! Doing something interesting with the photo to catch your eye always makes a better photograph!  In this photo we are right justified and there is emphasis payed to the line of the railroad track. Setting the boca on your camera to give a softness to the background also allows the people in the photo to take precedence over a somewhat busy background.

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9696

Three: Photography with kids can always be a little challenging! This little lady was in a pretty good mood while we did our photoshoot, but it’s really important to take a lot of pictures and engage the child. Ask them questions, get them excited.  Sometimes just telling them to smile rewards you with the photo below!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9836

They aren’t little models – so try to have fun with them. Engage them, make the exercise fun!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9773

Then you end up with fun photos like this sweet one. The sun rises and sets on her Pawpaw, and she’s the apple of his eye. These two are inseparable!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9774

If you want to get creative, take your camera to a different level.  So many people get caught up taking pictures from standing height. But some of the best shots might come from laying down or climbing up! So explore new heights!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9712

Don’t be afraid to use the sun!  Sometimes taking pictures with the sun streaming through make the most beautiful and whispy photos! Don’t be afraid to try something new! Natural sunlight is your friend, learn how to use it to your advantage!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9662

Have fun! Because a photo shoot is just like every other part of your life, it’s about capturing the memories! We will never be in this same time, or this same age. A photo should express the real personality behind the subjects. Leave staging to someone else!

2015 Fall Family Photoshoot in the Mountains-9701

And don’t forget your fur-babies. I have yet to master the art of getting them to both look at the camera at the same time. I call this a win because they are both facing forward.

Until next time! Enjoy this little slice of heaven that I call my family!

xoxo ~ Em

You guys, fall is here! In Rochester you could even say Winter has come! I’m in denial on that one just yet, but lets talk fall, leather, midi skirts, fall colors…

So outfit of the day this week – leather!  Who doesn’t love a leather skirt in the fall when the wind it getting a little cool.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-40

As seen here, S is pairing this fall green leather midi skirt with a simple lace appliqué top taking leather to the workplace, or just out for a date night with friends.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-47

We’ve put away all our summer sandals for a much needed rest, and broken out the wedges, closed toes, and booties for fall.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-48

Don’t forget your bling. The thing that takes an okay outfit to a great outfit is the accessories.  Here we went with a neutral shoe and a long necklace. Since the skirt is leather and the shirt has lace trim, you don’t want to overwhelm the outfit with lots of different pieces. Choose carefully to have a classy look. Sometimes there is such a thing as too much, so keep it simple, classy, and you can’t go wrong.

Until next week! xoxo ~ Em and S

DIY Blanket Cape

blanket cape, cape, create, diy, fashion

One of my favorite trends as the weather gets colder is the blanket cape.  Its an oh so cozy way to stay stylish as move forward into fall.  Want to explore this fun trend at a more budget friendly version than the ASOS? Try a DIY version!

Materials:
A polar fleece throw blanket, preferably in a fun print!
Scissors
Yarn, the same color as the stitching around the blanket
Yarn needle

1) Start by folding your blanket in half, then in half again. You should now have a square-ish shape a quarter of the original blanket size.

2) Next cut all the way down one of the folds. This will give you a cut in the blanket, centered on one side, and all the way to the middle.20130320-075411.jpg

3) Blanket stitch along your cut. Don’t know how to blanket stitch? Check out this YouTube video!  Note that you are not sewing two pieces together, you are just finishing the free edge.

4) Done! Awesome cozy blanket cape! 🙂

One of my favorite things about fall is the colors, patterns, and textures of the season.  So we often find that it comes out in our fashion.  Here, you can see S wearing a great fall print filled with orange, reds, and browns.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-6

We chose a slightly western flair pattern to go along with this seasons trends, and then amped up the style with a great pair of bold yellow pumps.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-5

Also popular this year was the sack dress. Don’t worry if you’re a little too curvy to wear the standard sack dress like Em.  Just throw on a belt to add some definition to your waist.

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-3

We love a little extra detail, so we chose this dress with 3/4 sleeves, an open back and a top that resembles a bow tie. Sometimes the simplest elements add the most!

Thanks for checking in again this week! We hope to see you back regularly!

4 Big Trends from Parish Fashion Week

Spring fashion weeks are well upon us. A few weeks ago, we reported on New York Fashion Week, but that has not fulfilled out need for spring fashion yet!  Here are some of our favorite looks from Paris Fashion Week.

Almost Naked

Sheer chiffon, revealing lace and open weave crochet fabrics.  These fabrics add a layer of elegance, while still incorporating your under garments as part of your wardrobe.  Personal favorite?  This amazing dress by Balenciaga.

Put a Bow on It

Soft feminine touches like a bow can really elevate your wardrobe!

Up The Volume

In your sleeves that is!  Large sleeves, voluimous sleeves of pretty much any style make their mark in Paris.  Likely a continuation of puffy sleeves of the fall Victorian trend, so don’t let your fashion sights stop there, and step outside the box.

Wear White

Paris fashion always makes me think simplistic, chic, and black.  Always black.  Spring fashion trends in Paris appeared to go the opposite direction though, with lots and lots of white.  After all, who wouldn’t want to wear this great dress by Hermes?

OOTD – How to Wear Denim on Denim

Happy Monday! So you’ve probably noticed that denim on denim is popular this season.  With temperatures dropping to the 30’s at night and the high only getting into the 50’s this week, we have officially welcomed fall.  The leaves are changing, the sweaters are coming out, and fair season has begun.  So here’s an idea of how to wear jean on jean, especially if you need an outfit idea to wear to the fair!

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-23

First, grab a button down jean shirt. Wear it tucked in, or loose! 15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-25

Pair it with a slightly darker wash denim jean. Popular right now are the boyfriend jeans, and the high waisted flair 1970’s jeans. 15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-26 15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-27

And we always love a great shoe, preferably with a heel. So we added a pair of sling back mules to this outfit to give a little height and comfort while out and about. Chunky shoes and mules are in, so pull out those closed toe shoes, fall is upon us!

15.09.01 Stylish_two OOTD September Photoshoot-09-28

And, you’ll notice, the ever present bandana is back in this post as well. It’s something to add a little color, its a popular trend that absolutely everyone can wear. So get a little crazy, find a bandana in a color you love, and jazz up your outfit with a little pop of color!

Until next week, xoxo Em & S
