If you ask me gingham and suede go together like peanut butter and jelly.  Both can go casual, or dressed up, so the combo leaves you ready to conquer!

The dreary spring weather in Maine means that I have days when I can’t quite talk myself into fabulous bring spring colors, and this combo fits the bill perfectly for my super busy schedule.

StylishTwo.com - Spring 2015 fashion trends gingham & suedeDon’t be shy about pairing black accessories with the suede, think if it as a neutral, instead of a brown.  I wore a great back woven belt, and a super comfortable pair of black slide sandals.  They let the focus be all on this great J Crew top, and luxe texture of the suede skirt while giving my feet a break from constant stilettos while I focused on getting this done!StylishTwo.com - Spring 2015 fashion trends gingham & suede

Until next time! XO – S

DIY Fashion Trends: Make Your Own Matching Separates @ StylishTwo.com

Thanks mostly Taylor Swift, this trend has been building momentum for a while now.  While matching separates can look like something you wore in kindergarten, when done right they can also be pretty amazing! Personally, my favorite is a wild print, with a cropped top and a high waisted skirt.  Can’t find the perfect one? Or maybe you just want to play with the trend without breaking the budget?  Consider making one with these simple steps!  I use a sewing machine, but you can use a needle and thread if you don’t have one!  Personally though, I think all good fashion forward women should own and know how to use a sewing machine, it makes projects like this so much easier!

What you Need
A Dress to modify, look for something with stretch, such as jersey material.  Shop for closet, or try a thrift store for an inexpensive option
1″ elastic
Marking Pen
Pins
Needle & Thread or Sewing Machine

Instructions

1. Try on your dress, and mark it where you want the bottom of your shirt.  Remember, cropped tops are perfect for a higher waisted skirt!

Stylish Two - DIY Matching Seperates

2. Mark across the width of your dress, making shirt the sides and middle are the same distance from the bottom.  Then cut so now you have a separate top and bottom.
Stylish Two - DIY Matching Seperates

3. Time for darts!  These are little sewn triangle shaped areas that make the fabric match the curve of your body.  The back of the skirt should have two darts.  Then make two more on the back and front of the top.

4. Sew your darts!  Not sure how?  Check out this website!

5. Cut two strips of the 1″ elastic.  One the size of your rib cage or waist where your top ends, and one the legnth of your waist or hips where you want your skirt to rest.  Sew in place using a zig zag stitch (this allows for stretch!)

group photo, how to make your wardrobe more springy, mint accents, mint green, purples, scarves, spring colors, spring fashion, statement necklaces

I love spring, so I thought I’d share an Outfit of the Day on how to mix and match for family pictures and jump into spring, even when the temperatures aren’t quite there yet! Cheers! xoxo – EM

IMG_8010-2

Add a mint scarf or statement necklace to make your warm soft sweaters more springy!

IMG_8020

Pair your sweater or vest with a purple shirt or sweater that makes you think spring flowers. Just adding soft touches with floaty materials like a light weight scarf can make an outfit feel more springy!

IMG_8025-2

Add a vest to dress and dress pants to dress it up for work, or jeans and a sweater to dress it down for weekend wear!

IMG_8038

Short sleeved sweaters over long sleeved jersey tops dress an outfit up just enough for a trip around town. Add a statement necklace and you’ve just turned your outfit up another notch! Add a great pair of mint heals and you’re ready for a night out on the town!

8 Tips on How to Keep Your Busy Life Organized

1. Write it down in one place!

I love my iPhone, but any smartphone will do. My calendar sync’s with my computer, my phone, my iPad and anywhere that I have access to iCloud.  Personally, as a tech junkie, I love this! I used to carry around a datebook, but I found that when I wasn’t looking at it I would miss important meetings or events. And heaven forbid that I leave it behind when I went somewhere, I was totally lost. The thing was quite literally my brain.  Now my iPhone is my brain, or maybe more correctly, it is my personal assistant. It sends reminders, alerts and sync’s with all my other devices that it’s hard not to see when something is coming up.  Or, in my case, when I am out of time to work on something. But I can’t tell you how many business people I know that use their phone, a datebook, a calendar at home and then they are constantly double booking themselves and stressed out about where they might have written it down.  So pick one place and make it work for you.  If you’re not a tech junky, check out one of my favorite bloggers Simple As That’s Printable Daily To Do Lists. I forewarn you though, be prepared to be inspired if you check out her blog!

2. Put it on your calendar

Calendar

So this might sound like the first one, but when I said to write it down in one place, that was for organization.  Put it on your calendar means actually block out time in your schedule to do something.  This is not limited to work activities.  If you want to make something a priority, put it in your schedule.  It will help to keep you from booking something else, but it will actually make you do it.  I put time in my schedule to read, spend time with my husband, and write this blog.  Because if I don’t, I simply won’t do it.

3. Prepare meals for the whole week on Sunday. (or whatever day works for you!)

Plan to Eat

It’s really easy to get into a pattern of eating junk food because we forgot to take the time to eat something and then we are so hungry that we don’t have enough mental energy to prepare something.  If you prepare your snacks and lunches for the whole week it’s really easy to just grab something from the refrigerator and go. I also set a timer on my phone to remind me to eat. I know, you think I’m crazy, but I have a tendency to get working on something and just power through meal times. Then I am so hungry I make poor choices or have difficulty focusing on the next task. Check out Buzzfeed’s Clean Eating Challenge if you need a jumpstart, or load your favorite recipes and snacks in Plan to Eat and it will print you a grocery list.

4. Workout in the morning

Nikefree

I know how you feel, I resisted the urge to work out in the morning for years! I liked decompressing at the end of the day by working out my stress in the gym. But as my busy life got out of control I started skipping the gym and my health suffered.  If you start out with a walk, exercise, the gym at the beginning of the day you are much less likely to skip doing it. If you can’t afford a gym membership, go for a walk around the block. It stimulates mental energy and makes you feel better! Here is my 4-Day workout log.

Workout Log 3 4Days

5. Schedule difficult tasks for when you are most alert

It’s true, we are human! And the truth is, we aren’t equally productive throughout the whole day.  We have a window of time (for most people in the morning) where we do our best critical thinking. Block out time in your schedule to do things that need your full attention during those times.  Don’t check your email, don’t answer you phone, and don’t get distracted by Facebook. (See above – plan time in your schedule for these activities) If you work for yourself, your clients will wait for you to call them back. They don’t know you’re in the office. It’s a great way to get more done in less time. Like the phrase “work smarter, not harder”. So if you’re like me, you hit a wall around 3pm. I never schedule any detailed work to happen during that time.  That’s the time I love to meet with clients, because they are excited and upbeat, so it wakes me up and energizes me to finish out my day. So take some time one week and listen to your body’s natural rhythm. Figure out when you are most productive and start blocking out time to do the hard tasks then. If you pick the one thing that has to get done that day, and do it during those hours, you’ll feel energized and your stress levels will go down because you aren’t procrastinating.

6. Clean off your desk at the end of the day and make a to do list for the next day!Credenza

It’s so much easier to walk out of my office, close the door, and leave the explosion on my desk behind.  But then I stress about all the things I have to do that week, and when I’m going to do them.  If I clean up my desk and make a to do list, I am mentally leaving my brain at work and am free to do fun things with my family after the day is over. I’ve created a plan for what needs to get done and I feel happy. And when I clean my desk I find notes I left for myself that are reminders of things that need to get done and have to get on the to do list. It’s liberating really, just try it.

7. Schedule time to return phone calls, check email, or handle social media!

In today’s technology era we get sucked into “constant availability”. The problem with that, is our tasks never have our full attention.  It takes twice as long to get something done if an email comes in and divides our attention. Email also causes us to be in a reactive mode. We just have to answer this question or solve that problem. The truth is, there are very few things that need your immediate attention. So shut off the distractions and get ready to see a bump in your productivity!

8. Set goals and review them daily

And I will leave you with this gem. Set goals, otherwise you might find you’re at the top of the ladder and it’s leaning on the wrong building. (Dave Ramsey)  That’s not just a metaphor for business, although I own my own business. The same rules apply to life at home. If I didn’t set a goal to spend time with my friends (who are not business associates) once a week, it just wouldn’t happen.  And then I’d wake up one day and wonder why none of my friends called me anymore.  They would just think I’m too busy to spend time with them and they would move on. So set goals, and remind yourself often what they are, because we are now a quarter of the way through the year, are you on track with your goals?

OOTD: Fashion Trends Overalls and Cropped Sweater

Clearly, I enjoy a cropped sweater, since this is the third time I have posted one in the last couple of months.  Why?  Because you really can wear them in many ways that are flattering for all body types, even if you are shy about actually showing anything close to your stomach.

Last week,  I did a bonus outfit of a cropped sweater of a button down shirt I wore to a meeting.  This week, it was my shopping outfit.  Functional, stylish, and wearing a number of trends from this spring!

Spring 2015 Fashion Trend: How to Wear Overalls @StylishTwo.comWhile I think your reusable shopping bags are also a total must, really I decided I wanted to wear my overalls.  The weather is still chilly in Maine (notice the shorts), so the cropped sweater was the perfect combo to keep me warm, while still showing just a touch of skin.  I love this purple stripped one too, but combining it with overalls helped me to feel less self conscious, while still playing with fashion trends.  I paired it with a white cross body bag for function, and an awesome pair of chunky ankle boots, which give me height without the problems of trying to shop in a more narrow heel.

Spring 2015 Fashion Trend: How to Wear Overalls @StylishTwo.com

Also, since this early morning shopping trip did not involve me washing my hair beforehand, I did a great upside down french braid as a way to contain my second day hair!

Happy Monday!

Healthy Skincare for Sensitive Skin

arbonne products, beauty regime, body wash, face wash, sensitive skin, sensitive skincare, shampoo and conditioner, skincare

If you have been following our blog you might realize by now that I (Em) am a bit of a health nut. My architecture practice is all about sustainable design. So in my everyday life I try to think about what I put in my body and on my body. Whenever I get a complement on how great my skin looks, I just smile. I may have been blessed with great genetics that I made it through my teen years without acne problems, but I have the most sensitive skin you can imagine. So I apologize if you tuned in to get some great advice on foundations and concealers. I simply don’t wear them. But my secret to great skin is as follows:

1. I wash my face and my body with Jason Lavendar Body Wash.

300

I love the scent and it’s gentle so using it on my face works great. I can’t use those microderm exfoliating face wash and so many face soaps have harmful chemicals that strip your face of oils causing your body to produce more oil and get more breakouts. Or they have the opposite effect and you get out of the shower feeling greasy. You don’t want your face to feel squeaky clean or greasy. Almost all dermatologist will recommend you use something that is fragrance free.  Soaps and lotions that use any type of petroleum products make your skin feel nice, but they trap water below them preventing evaporation. Your skin can protect you from harmful chemicals or intensify the effects.  So when I find something that works for me and doesn’t irritate my skin I take a look at what’s in it and stick with it.

2. Next it’s really important for your skin that you’re careful about what you use in your hair. I have had a lot of success with Arbonne products, a line of swiss skincare.

Hair

I know, it sounds crazy, but many people have difficulty with conditioner making their face break out.  Or, they don’t realize that there is gluten in their hair or skincare products.  We don’t even think about it, but when you wash and condition your hair the products you used in it to style or color it get washed all over your body.

3. Hydration – Again, because I have had so much success with the skincare line from Arbonne, I use their sensitive skin lotions.

Beauty Regime

My all time favorite product is the calm face lotion which does not make my skiing break out into a rash or hives. But I also love their FC5 hand lotion and FC5 foot lotion. As our skin ages it has a harder time staying hydrated so it is critically important to use a face and body moisturizer.

4. Deodorizer, with this one you might laugh, but I got a little tip from my Arbonne consultant that she uses the foot cream as a deodorant. And in a pinch it totally works.

Deodorant

It’s cooling and deodorizing. I found, for me, that long term use made me break out in a rash so I switched to their actual deodorant, which smells like spearmint toothpaste.  But I have tried 10+ natural deodorants and this one has worked the best so far.  Natural deodorant gets a bad rap (as many of them should) but I just cannot see adding metal to my under arm area to keep me from sweating. If i’m sweating, my body needs to release those toxins.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. Leave us some feedback on what has worked for you, we love to share testimonials on products that work!

xoxo ~ Em

PS. Disclaimer: Although I personally love the Arbonne products and I use them in my daily regime; I do not sell them and I do not work for Arbonne.
