Anything work related, other than actually going into the OR, in my life involves very professional attire.  It is easy to get into a very plain-Jane rut of attire when you are limited, and always trying to represent yourself well.  I recently attended an anesthesia conference, where I was clearly representing myself to colleagues, future employers, and my profession to the outside world.  I try to look polished without loosing my own sense of trendy style.

Stylish Two - Black and WhiteFor this particular conference, I chose to rock the black and white trend that has been very popular this spring.

My base was a pair of tuxedo pants that I bought recently.  They have an almost shiny finish, with the matte stripe down the side and a clean fit.

I added a chiffon black and white shirt, which softens the fit of the tuxedo pants.  Its a loose fit, that drapes well.

A pair of black patten leather pumps blend into the leg of the tuxedo pants, making my legs look even longer.at mil ring in colors that complimented my outfit, and some diamond jewelry that didn’t over power the effect of my clothes, which I wanted to speak for themselves!Stylish Two - Blakc and WhiteStylish Two - Black and White

Must Have Spring 2015 Bag Trends

After shoes, bags are probably my next biggest culprit for trends I just can’t help but give into.  I love having a stylish stack of bags to choose from.  After all, the perfect bag can really make an outfit, and a change of season always means some great new bags! So what are my favorite bags for this spring?

bucketbag

Bucket Bags
Perhaps what I am most excited about this year, and the bag I have already bought to be my spring go to!  Bucket bags have a great effortless, casual feel to them do to their relaxed structure.  This season so, there are no limits.  They are coming in great colors, textures, and even prints.  Any bucket bag that speaks to your personal style will put you ahead this spring!

circlebag

Circles
Circles were a very popular shape this year on the runways, and why not?  They break the traditional square or rectangular shape which can seem so…stiff!  Don’t get my wrong, rectangles are still a trend (especially upright ones), but why not step outside your comfort zone and try a great circle clutch.

floralbag

Floral
Nothing says spring quite like a floral print, and my very feminine side loves it.  This year, floral patterns came in all colors and styles.  From the subtle Mulberry bag, which hinted on the trend for neural colors, to bolder prints like Valentino and Fendi. Go big, and find a great floral and let a little bit of your girlie side come out.

fringe

Fringe
Fringe has been here for a while, and it doesn’t look like it is going anywhere!  Suede is a huge trend for spring, and a safe bet this spring, but also feel free to reach out to other fringe shapes and styles.  This Armani bag is particularly drool worthy.

handlebags

Handles
Don’t worry, cross body bags and shoulder bags haven’t left us, but top handle bags are certainly making their presence be know this spring.  Even clutches with great side handles seemed to appear everywhere!  Not quite ready to make the switch (or give up a free hand), try a bag with handles and a strap like Alexander Wang.  It will give you the style, without loosing the convenience.

  twobag

Two Bags
Big bags, and little bags both made some very bold statements this season.  Can’t quite decide?  Go with both!  I love the convenience of a large tote, where I can put everything from my kindle to a first aid kit, but the tiny bags are just so adorable, and sometimes just so much easier…this season, quiet a few designers encouraged us not to choose, and just carry both!

Enjoy a fresh spring bag, and warmer days to come! xoxo – S

Outfit of the Day – Workout Attire

being fit, great bras, great running shoes, nike, nike free, OOD, outfit, workout, workout attire, workout clothes, workout shirts, yoga pants

I’m not the girl that puts make-up on to go to the gym.  I’m not saying i’ve never worn make-up to the gym, on the contrary, I have often gone to the gym after working all day, but I do feel that it’s really important to wear something you feel great in to the gym. 1. I think it makes you more likely to go to the gym if you’ve got a great outfit. And 2. I always run into people I know at the gym. It’s the one place where wearing yoga pants in pubic is totally acceptable.  So this is my typical gym attire.

1. Yoga pants. I know I have scarred up knees from years of field hockey in school – so i’m one to cover my legs – but at the same time, I find that yoga pants mold to your body making workouts easier because I am not constantly fidgeting with my clothes. I prefer boot leg cuts, but many runners go for a totally fitted leg.

Yoga pants

2. S makes fun of me for this all the time, but I simply don’t care – I always wear a 3/4 length or long sleeve t-shirt.  My skin is super sensitive and I just don’t like my skin touching the gym equipment! There is also some measure of comfort for me with more skin covered up, even if it’s tight.

Shirt and pants

3. A great bra – seriously this one should probably be first.  Try out a bunch of different bras and see which one works for you.  Because I do a combo of weight lifting and cardio I want a bra that is rated for “active”. This Victoria Secret Bra is my go to, but everyone is different. It’s super supportive, comfortable, and hey – it’s cute!

And last, but not least – A great pair of shoes.  It’s extremely important whether you are walking or running to have the right shoe for your feet.  Everyone is different whether they walk on the inside or outside of their foot, whether they have a high or low arch, and how you put your foot down when you walk.  I highly suggest getting evaluated by your local running company, even if you’re only planning to walk. If you’re in Maine, I love Maine Running Company! They fit me for my Nike Free’s below and I just keep buying more! These shoes make my feet feel wonderful even after pounding the pavement for 50 miles during the MS Challenge Walk!

Nikefree nike free 2

So get out there and get some great gym clothes.  You don’t have to spend a lot, my yoga pants and top are from Old Navy! I love to visit their stores right after christmas and get great deals!  Spend the money on your shoes, your feet will thank you!

Cheers, XOXO ~ Em

airport style, bathing suits, beach, beach wear, blue water, Dominican Republic, flip flops, gladiator sandals, island style, linen pants, maxi dress, ocean, vacation, vacation attire, Vacation in the Dominican Republic, what to pack in your carry on

Sadly we have returned from the Dominican Republic and find ourselves immersed in work and cold weather. As a little recap I have decided to write today about our journey!

Airport style, although we all wish to be celebrities in some small recess of our brains, most of us wish to be comfortable and stylish with our airport style.  No stilettos, no confining corsets, because hours on a plane should be comfortable.  Below you see Sarah in her maxi skirt and vintage t-shirt while Em chose linen pants and layers.  Leaving from a cold destination she was able to shed the lightweight cardigan and thin silk over shirt for a sleeveless tank top and those all important flip flops that were packed in her carry-on!

Next let’s talk carry-ons!  Although Em and S made it safely to the DR with all of their luggage, some of our family did not.  So it’s ultra important to pack a few essentials in your carry on.  For the Islands I packed flip flops, a bathing suit, a maxi dress to throw on over it all, any medications necessary including Excedrin, Advil, and Benedryl.  And then the toiletries that are hard to live without – toothbrush, deodorant, and sunscreen!

IMG_4099

In the islands, we love to be fashionable.  So here are a few images from our travels!

image DSC_1038 DSC_1049 DSC_1101 DSC_1121imageFrom bathing suits to dancing with the locals on the boat, we tried to carry our stylish ways to the islands, just like we do from home. Sadly we had to leave the beauty of the islands and return to usher in spring at home.

DSC_1241 DSC_1243 DSC_1256 DSC_1264So as we lavish in the fond memories from our trip, we are reminded that days in paradise are so much nicer when earned by handwork at home!

And it’s always good to come home!

Outfit of the Week: Working a Bit of Spring Into Your Wardrobe

After the winter we have had, its hard to imagine that spring really is right around the corner!  After spending more than a week in the Dominican Republic on vacation with my beloved Em, returning to the Northeast seems cold, and still covered with snow.  That said, I can still feel the temperatures rising, and the little hints of spring that are in the air. It really is fast approaching, and I couldn’t be more excited!

I took today off from my normal Anesthesia job to get a few things done before I fully settled back into reality, and I decided to incorporate little elements of the pending warmer weather into my wardrobe, mainly using color.

3-16a

The coral color of this tank with the loose weave of the cardigan are perfect spring time colors and look great together.  A skinny black belt helped take down some of the bulk of the cardigan, giving it a more feminine shape.

3-16b

Seeing as I am rarely safe with my fashion choices, and was not quite ready to give up my shorts from last week, I work a dark denim pair, over flowered leggings.  The pattern and colors is very spring, but my legs were still kept from being bare in the still chilly temperatures.3-16cFinally, I finished it off with a pare of nude stacked heels.  This outfit says a lot, a nude is the perfect color to let the clothes take all the attention.

Dress for spring everyone! xo- S

How to be stylish when traveling by airplane

Em and I love to travel! Pretty much any excuse to jet away, and we are all over it! This trip is a great excuse, the Em’s 5 year anniversary! Her wedding was a carebbian vacation, so of couse, its very fitting for this trip to be a group carebbian vacation as well. Sounds like a great reason to be  sitting on a beach in my bikini with fruity drink in hand to me!

Em & S on vacation

Em & S on vacation

Having spent a bit of time in an airport lately, I think the world could use a bit of advice on how to be stylish while jetting around the world.  For example, leggings, not worn as leggings should be, and pajama pants were frequently seen, making the wearers seem frumpy and disheveled.  Check out my tips below to look like your most stylish self the next time you go to board an airplane.

1) Wear layers that easily go on and off. Light scarves, cambray shirts and cartigans are great options.

2)Wear comfortable bottoms that don’t make you look bound for yoga class or the bedroom.  Many skinny jeans have a higer percentage of lycra, the fabric that makes your clothes stretchy and are a great option and come in a variety of colors. Maxi skirts are flowy and oh so comfortable and can be a great alternative.

3) Shoes. My favorite things! Having needed to run to my termial a few too many times in my life, I rarely now rock my favorite stilettos at the airport.  Look for great flats that slip on an off easily, as many airports still require their removal for security check points.  Fun colors and textures can step up your footwear a notch while still being functional.  If you really want a little lift, look for a comfortable wedge or stacked heel that will give you more support for airport sprits or standing in long lines.

4) I never travel without a great tote or shopper bag.  Find one that suits your style, and maybe even matches your luggage.  It will let you carry a snack, entertainment, and layers of clothing you shed on the plane with you.  Also, if you end up on a too full plane, and they request you check your carry on you still have room for a change of clothes, makeup and toothbrush while still looking polished if your luggage disapears.

Outfit of the day: Island Fashion – what to wear when you’re in the Caribb

09 Monday Mar 2015

What to wear when you and your bestie are relaxing in the islands!

Navy is in! It’s a hot spring color paired with mint tones and white tones. Maxi dresses are also very popular in the islands. As a free and floaty material Em had 3 maxi dresses packed for this trip! Dress up the Cotten material with a fun statement necklace for dinner or just throw one over your bathing suit and head to the beach! It’s versatile if you’re looking to pack less on your trip to the islands to save on baggage!

image

S wore her favorite jean romper, and with denim combos trending high this spring it was the perfect attire! Team it with a great statement accessory, like this fantastic vintage belt. To top off this outfit, the addition of another tend for this year, knee high gladiator sandals, make this outfit perfect for a spring trip to a tropical island. Comfortable, wearable, and very fashion forward!

imageimage

sorry for the delay in photo updates! I think we have finally figured out what resolution they need to be in order to upload them with the slow internet here at the resort! Cheers! Em & S

This not That – a few tips from the busy life of an Architect

05 Thursday Mar 2015

Posted by Em ♥ S in Uncategorized

I read a lot of business books. I even have one packed for my trip to the Dominican Republic with Sarah next week (Stay tuned for tips from the beach)! In all of these books there is a resounding theme, what doesn’t make it on your schedule, never gets done.  And taking time for yourself makes you a better business person, boss, employee, and friend.  So today’s post is going to be a little bit about what I do to keep on track!

One, as an environmentally conscious person, I can’t stand all the individual serving size plastic cups that everything from K-cup coffee to yogurt come in. So I buy a big tub of yogurt that I divide out into my smoothies (or into reusable, washable containers to take on the go) But more importantly – If I only want one cup of coffee I use my french press! It’s quick, it’s easy, and there is no plastic cup to throw away at the end!

IMG_3991IMG_3985

Then I make a smoothie! My favorite is ice, a tablespoon of peanut butter, vanilla protein powder and almond milk! I make these in my Ninja blender which has individual cup sizes that fit onto the blender and have travel lids to take with you on the go. This is definitely my go to on a busy morning. It takes under 5 minutes and it’s a very satisfying breakfast. Especially for someone like me who is on the go in the morning and more likely to skip breakfast altogether if it’s not quick.IMG_3544 IMG_3879

I follow a 5 factor diet, I eat 5 times a day, and yes I have an alarm set on my phone to remind me to get up and eat. Keeping my blood sugar even keeps me from snacking on unwanted foods. And I fully admit to getting busy and skipping meal times! But in the 5 factors you need a healthy fat (olive oil, avocado, or ghee), healthy carbohydrate (think veggies), protein (at least 10 grams per meal), fiber, and a sugar free beverage! I’m a huge water drinker so I also partake in 1/2 my body weight worth of water – so about 75oz of water a day!

And I finish off my day with a glass of wine and a colorful meal.  What you’re eating doesn’t have to be hard, but colorful or presented well makes a world of difference. And studies have shown that red wine is good for many health reasons. Everything in moderation – if you live on a strict diet you’ll give it up before it ever becomes a lifestyle change.

IMG_3381

So those are just a few tips from me on what I do on a daily basis to stay healthy, and keep the environment friendly.

Till next week in the DR ~ xoxo Em

blue and white, blue shoes, jewel tone blue, jewel tones, OOD, outfit, pointy shoes, sleeveless blue, spring 2015 fashion trends, spring fashion, white for spring, white pants, yellow accents

This is the outfit I wore to my Maine Home and Design Fashion Shoot! Although their photos will be so much better then mine, here is a little peak for what I think, as an Architect is hot for spring!

Emily1

White is IN!

Emily2

Bold blue colors with A-symetrical Hem Lines

Emily3

A classy pair of pointy shoes – oh and YELLOW – I’m not wearing it, but it’s my fashionable office accessory!

Emily5

Again – JEWEL TONES _ I chose blue because it’s a good color for me, but think bright for spring!

Emily6

I love the the architectural nature of this hem – paired with white pants so it really pops!

Emily4

And who can forget a great pair of heels! That makes any outfit classy! Keep them closed toe for work – so get funky with the point, the heel, or the fabric!

Keeping it classy – Until next week – xoxo – Em
