How to Pack for a Stylish Week in Your Carry On

24 Tuesday Feb 2015

While getting a long over due pedicure with my sister, we started discussing our upcoming trip of New Orleans.  I am am going for an anesthesia conference, and she is tagging along for…well, no reason other than to go to NOLA, but I certainly can’t blame her for that!  She assumed I would be checking a bag, which I corrected.  Its 5 days of meetings, and hopefully enjoying a little town night life, and even me, with my excessive fashions can probably squeeze that into a carry on!

FStylish Two Fashion Blogor starters, make sure that you have luggage that meet your flights restrictions, measure to make sure.  Also, get yourself a large purse.  Most flights allow you to have a carry on, and a “personal item.”  Your purse can carry your overflow if needed, and allow for you to come back with more than you left with, yay shopping!  If you are not the large purse type, throw a clutch inside to use while you are at your destination, and can leave your purse safely in the hotel room.

Here is my luggage! Are you can tell, I wont be loosing mine anytime soon!

Next, know what its most important for your tip.  I have 4 days at the conference, and the flight home.  That means four base professional outfits, and something comfortable.

I chose basics for my professional look that I could mix, match and layer.  This gives me more options for reuse, and allows me to alter my look quickly.  I also make sure to pick fabrics that would travel well in tight spaces, like knits and jerseys.  I chose two dresses, a skirt and a pair of paints.  I packed 3 business shirts, and 3 cardigans.  As you can see above, one of them was leopard print–which makes a stylish statement, and can easily transition to night wear. One of the remaining cardigans is metallic for the same reason.  The trick is multi purpose!Stylsih Two Fashion Blog

Next on the agenda is pieces that will allow a transition from day to night.  I am heading to a warming climate, so I packed two chiffon tops.  These are virtually no weight, and take up very little space.  They can be layered over a dress, or worm over a cami to liven up an outfit.  I also added in a black and brown belt, and two statement necklaces–which also add very little bulk, but add a lot of pop to an outfit.

Finally, a few t-shirts for their easy and comfort, and two pairs of shoes–nude wedges and silver heels.  Both so versatile, allowing me to mix and match them with my outfit.

I ended up having more than enough space, and threw in a great fun dress…just in case!

Happy Packing (literally from a bar in New Orleans!) . –S

While we are all eager for the fresh fashions for spring, we are still in the depths of winter!  Cold temperatures, and frequent snow storms keep hitting the northeast.  One of my favorite trends is the oversized turtleneck.  Its easy, cozy, and effortlessly stylish.

They look best with a skinny pant, such as these polka dot jeans, which are one of my favorites!  This outfit could also work with another trend of this year, leather leggings, for an edgier look.  I chose burgundy ankle boots for a pop of color with this mild colored sweater.  Perfectly delightful for meeting up with friends, or a movie date!  In my case, coffee on the go in my favorite peacock mug!

So here are my top 5 favorite spring fashion trends for 2015

1. The Shirtdresshttp-::www.glamour.com:images:fashion:2014:09:rebecca-minkoff-shirt-dress-spring-2015-h724

Glamour Magazine

The shirtdress can be casual or dressed up, but I think it brings a sexy side to a classic button down.  As seen above, a cute belt can take that shirt dress from a sloppy sack to a fit and stylish outfit. I also love that the shirt dress above has slits that are not too risqué but make this tea length style easy to move in! And I just love a good strip pattern! Never be afraid to get something tailored either.  If you’re like me, the top of the shirt dress hangs limp and way too big in order to get one that fits over my much wider hips! So invest that extra couple of dollar into a tailor and be in fashion this season!

2. Bright Yellowhttp-::4.bp.blogspot.com:-qWFgnAc1emI:VCkG2W-isBI:AAAAAAAAKXQ:TpzG_e2NhMo:s1600:NYFW%2BCOLOR%2BTRENDS

Beautifully Fierce

I love YELLOW!  I’ve been wearing yellow for years, but it’s not a good color for everyone.  Don’t let that steer you away from yellow this season.  Simply pair a yellow pant or skirt with a white top and enjoy the fun yellow fashion trend.  You can also try adding a scarf to your yellow top to break the yellow between your face and shirt!

3. Culotteshttp-::cdn.fashionisers.com:wp-content:uploads:2014:10:spring_summer_2015_fashion_trends_wide_leg_pants_and_culottes_fashionisers

Fashionisers

Although plenty of things are “in” this year, it looks like short is back! Short flowy culottes from the past are in. Showing off sexy ankles with strapy sandals or a great pair of heels, these floaty short pants are going to be HOT this season!

4. Head to Toe WhiteFrame-Denim-Spring-2015-w724 www.glamour.com

Glamour Magazine

I look out my window and all I can see is white, but somehow this head to toe white look makes me SUPER excited for spring.  It’s classy, it’s refreshing, and it’s easy! White and Yellow are in, crisp and classy for spring!

5. Army Green

Fashion Winter Summer

Who’s to say that army green isn’t amazing.  Green being one of my favorite colors, I love what Ralph Lauren did with this classic style and army green neutral!

It will be interesting to see what the population picks up on from spring fashion 2015. Although these were some of my favorites, I don’t always win in the general public fashion game!

Until next week, xoxo ~ Em

Outfit of the Week: Faux Fur Vest

16 Monday Feb 2015

I love my DIY vest. Love. Love. Love.  Why, because I can wear it with anything, and with the frigid tempts and blizzard over blizzard here in the northeast, I have worn it over and over again since I made it! Warm, and stylish. Exactly what I need!

IMG_1397

One of my favorite ways to wear it belted over a patterned long sleeve (flannel, stripes or polka dots!), with skinny jeans and boots.  Casual, warm, and super cute.  I though, am not exactly “casual” by nature, so how exactly can you dress up your fur vest?

By actually wearing it over a dress!  Dresses tend to spend a lot more time hanging in the closet in the winter months because they can be hard to make temperature appropriate, but by pairing a dress with boots, and your vest, you just made the outfit a lot warmer and more seasonable.

IMG_1399

So expand with that fur vest, and try wearing it over different elements, especially over that dress you have been dying to wear out.

Fur Vest

Calvin Klein Faux Fur

Fur vest have been trending this winter, and I have to confess I am loving it.  Especially with the cold temperatures and frequent snow storms.  In faux fur seems perfectly cozy this season!

While stores offer a wide variety, I was struggling to find exactly the perfect one, at least, in my price range, so I decide to try to make my own!

What you need
A vest to use as a template
Faux fur fabric (the size of the vest)
Sharp scissors
Sewing machine, or needle and thread
Something to mark fabric with (I like chalk)

1) Lay out your fabric, folded in half with furry sides together.  Trace out your vest, with an extra half inch around the outside to allow for the seam.
IMG_1370

2) Cut out along your traced lines.  You should have two identical pieces.  One of them will be the front, cut this piece in half, and shape it however you like.  I rounded the front corner, and had it arch out to create the V part of the neck, which you can see below.

IMG_1371

3) Now you should have three pieces.  Lay the two front pieces on top of the back, furry sides together, with matching seams aligned.  Sew along the top edges, and down the two sides, under the arm holes, as seen below.

IMG_1373

Turn it right side out, and ta-da! You have an easy, but fantastically stylish faux fur vest!

IMG_1381Check back Monday for my outfit of the week post, to see it in an outfit!

Until then, xo –S

I’m a little tired of all this snow that we keep getting in New England! So my outfit of the day is all about that upcoming spring weather that we daydream about.  The stores have put out their bathing suits, and winter fashion is all on clearance – even though we are in the heart of some major winter weather.

So how about a great printed jacket over a solid dress! Don’t be afraid to be bold!

Belted Jacket

Pair that jacket and solid dress with a solid colored statement necklace to add a pop of color! In this case I chose mint green which is one of my favorites!Necklace

And don’t forget that all important pair of heels! I also chose these in a peep toe, mint green, with mesh sides to give that extra feeling of spring sandals!shoes

Until Spring, enjoy a little spring fashion and get out there now to get a jump on what’s hot in spring fashion for this year!

Until next week! xoxo ~ Em

Why Is Being Active Daily So Important for People Who Have Sedentary Jobs!

Kitchen Desk

As an Architect, I have a fairly sedentary job.  Sure there are days when i’m out on a job site or doing an energy inspection, but most days I sit comfortably in front of my computer researching, designing and drafting.  The older I get the harder it is to shake those extra pounds, but worse then that, is the pain. You laugh, you say “But you’re only in your 30’s” However, it’s true.  Things hurt now that never hurt when I was an active 20 year old or a spongey teenager! My back hurts from too many hours of sitting. My neck and shoulders are stiff from hunching over my desk and poor posture.  We weren’t made to sit all day long, and yet, in my line of work sitting is what I do. And a lot of it.

Get a pair of awesome running shoes to help you feel stylish and remind you to be more active!

Get a pair of awesome running shoes to help you feel stylish and remind you to be more active!

Staying active has proven to be beneficial for metal and physical health. All manner of study has been done relating deceases to sitting all day, or high stress jobs that keep us sitting in front of computers for 60+ hours a week.  For me, I have always loved the gym. I liked indoor track in high school and lifting weights in the weight room.  I enjoyed yoga in college, and joining the Planet Fitness (Now Orange Circuit) and the YMCA. I look forward to going to the gym and sweating it out. I always feel better afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, there are days when i’m too busy or too tired, or just don’t want to. But in general, I love the gym. But i’m not a runner, I hate to run.  So in April of 2013, after feeling terrible and having gained a few too many pounds, I joined the gym again (because I will be the first to admit that when things change in my life I stop going to the gym crazy, but true) and I read a book that has changed my thinking on health and fitness. The book was written by Harley Pasternak who has written several books “The Five Factor Diet”, “The Body Reset Diet”, “Five Factor Fitness” The premise behind the book was, we must be active, every day. It turned me on to Fitbit a step counter (like a pedometer) that you wear on your wrist. There have been some complaints about their accuracy, but what is most important for me is that I look down at my wrist and see 1 flashing dot out of 5, I know I need to get moving.  The average person, in a healthy world, would take 10,000 steps a day! On an average day, i’m no where near that. Not with a sedentary job. In addition to those 10,000 steps a day, we do need to do resistance training. Check Harley out here on his AOL experts page where he talks about the ability to do these exercises at home.  What I love most about 5 factor fitness and health is it’s easy to remember. 5 days a week. 5 exercises (cardio, strength, strength, core, cardio). And if you follow the diet you eat 5 times a day with the following 5 ingredients (Protein, Fiber, Healthy Fat, Healthy Carbohydrate, low calorie drink). I’ve tried the 30 day detoxes, and the shake companies without a lot of success.  I developed an aversion to whey protein, I didn’t eat enough on protein days to mentally stimulate my brain, all that extra protein is hard on your kidneys, and I just had a hard time keeping up with all the things I can and can’t eat.  I’m tired of that, I want a lifestyle change that works for me.

Emily's Fitbit

Emily’s Fitbit

But sitting all day is terrible for your body. We only burn about one calorie a minute sitting all day. And even a healthy exercise program can’t combat the sedentary lifestyle. So get up, walk to the copier, take a lap around the office, socialize with someone on your feet for a few minutes. Even when working at a local call company during the holiday season they had us get up for 15 minutes and do stretching during our shifts.  It’s important to stay active!  And for us ladies, one of my good friends who is an athletic trainer and heath coach says that to maintain our weight as we get older, we have to do strength training.  It’s not just good enough to be active.

So get up out of that chair and take a lap around the office, around the block, or at least to the copier to help stay active!

So watch what you eat, get up off that chair and get moving, and do a little exercise to help muscle retention and weight as we grow older every day!

Outfit of the Week: Style to things you love.

IStylishTwo - Crop sweater, maxi shirtf you remember, I was given a challenge this year: to wear everything in my closest, or if finds its way to the nearest Goodwill.  The problem that this creates, is that we all have pieces in our wardrobe, that for some strange reason, we love.  That ugly sweater.  Those shoes that haven’t been in style for 5 years. That dress that is oh so comfortable, but even a hippie wouldn’t wear.  For me, it’s an emerald green crushed velvet maxi shirt.  I openly admit that it has probably never been in style.  Do I love it none the less? Absolutely. This meant I needed to rise to the challenge.

Saturday night C and I went to a wine bar now too far from home, called Carpe Diem.  It was a great place to have a glass, and enjoy some fantastic company.  It’s also not exactly a casual place, which is exactly how I like it!

Being bitter cold out here in the northeast, my green velvet shirt was just begging to come out and play.   So how did I make it work? But pairing it with pieces that are more in trend.

IMG_1353

Stylish Two Crop SweaterThanks to some fantastically stylish ladies (like Taylor Swift), the crop top has been trying hard to make a fashion statement for a while now.  This white cropped sweater adds an updated look to the green velvet, and balances the heaviness of the velvet, but drawing your eye somewhere else.  The skirt is no longer the statement, the sweater, and my bare mid-drift, take center state.

The moral of the story: If you love a particular piece of clothing, find a way to update it, and continue to work it into your wardrobe.  By adding more modern looking pieces, it is easier than you think!
