Happy CRNA Week!

I am very happily in the last few months of my CRNA program, and this week is the annual celebration of my future career! I share this because most people have no idea what I do, or any of the requirements of my job.  Chances are if you have had anesthesia, it was given by a CRNA!  I encourage everyone to learn more about these highly educated, specialized, professionals by using the link above.

So, why am I bringing this up now? The world of anesthesia is one of the most unfashionable jobs ever.  I wear the same uni-gender monochromatic green garments as every other OR staff member.  I have to wear a scrub cap, covers on my shoes, most of the time a mask and eye protection as well.  Many hospitals don’t allow jewelry or even painted nails.  Very liIMG_1070miting right?

Every morning I change in the locker room, and notice the number of people who come in wearing sweat pants, yoga pants, hoodies, and other equally unfashionable attire.  I have to ask myself, why?  Yes, I arrive early…in fact, I am often one of the first people into the hospital.  I am only in my street clothes for a much shorter time than I wear my OR scrubs, and sometimes I am too mentally and physically exhausted to think about a great outfit.  At the end of the day though, I am an eccentric, well educated professional, and that is how I want to present myself, always. Belore work some examples of outfits I have worn to work over the last couple of weeks!

So next time you are getting dressed, dress for who you are, and who to be in life, not for the fact you maybe have a less than stylish job!

As an architect, I straddle the line between Art and Engineering.  So my fashionable side likes to be a little more adventurous then the standard button down shirt and pencil skirt.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a great pencil skirt! But I also loved this outfit.

Whole Outfit

I paired a simple blue sweater dress with a braided brown belt, brown boots, and a pretty patterned scarf.

BeltedDressWScarf

Pretty Octavia paisley print scarf that I got in my last Stitch Fix!

Belted Dress

Shift Dress, Blue Sweater Dress from Old Navy.

Boots

And a great pair of boots to finish the outfit!

In my world, it’s all about the accessories!

With Love till next time!

Massage: It Truly Is A Stress Reliever!

22 Thursday Jan 2015

massage, massage therapy, migraine headaches, stress, stress relief

There seems to be a lot of conflicting reports in the medical community about the actual benefits of having a massage.  Although science seems to support the fact that “tight” muscles may actually have nothing to do with “sore muscles” it does seem very promising that massage gives temporary relief and reduces stress and depression.  I’m sold!  Even if the only real benefit of having a massage is that it relieves stress, those of us who own our own businesses or work is high stress jobs can definitely benefit from massage!

My stress level this week has been through the roof!  Deadlines looming, projects on hold, or ready to start, or underway and in need of time and devotion.  It didn’t matter, it was an incredibly stressful week, and I paid the price.  Here it is, Thursday, and I woke up with a massive migraine.  I tell you what, having a migraine makes you less then efficient.  Blurry vision, nausea, and pounding pain in your head make for less then stellar job performance. So I called up the local massage therapist and had an appointment 2 hours later! For me, being dehydrated often gives me migraines, so I drink lots of water.  And when I say lots, I mean I drink at least half my body weight in oz of water everyday.  I’m not dehydrated, but I am stressed. Research shows a direct correlation between stress and headaches.

I don’t know if it’s trigger point therapy, releasing of knotted muscles, or just the psychological aspects of having someone touch you for a 1/2 hour that is relaxing, but I let go of a little bit of the stress and the headache gave way to a more muddled “after headache” fogginess that is common for me after having a migraine.  I managed to finish out my day at a slightly lower stress level and it was worth every penny I spent in the process.

On a side note: If you are like my husband and I and planning a winter getaway, have your massage the day before you leave.  The local spa is often a lot less pricey then the resorts, and if you regularly or semi regularly get massages, your massage therapist is going to know how to de-stress you.  I had a massage at the resort the last time I went away on vacation, not only was the massage disappointing (I like deep tissue and hate swedish massage), we were at the beach and there was sand in everything. So the massage ended up being more of an exfoliation then a massage.  Maybe some people like that, but it’s not my cup of tea!

This is Em in the DR in 2014! Can't wait to go back to the Dominican Republic to dive, relax, swim in the ocean and lounge on the beach!

This is Em in the DR in 2014! Can’t wait to go back to the Dominican Republic to dive, relax, swim in the ocean and lounge on the beach!

So in conclusion, although I am not a medical specialist, and I have no idea about all the reports and research on the benefits of massage, I can tell you it was more then worth the money I spent and the time I devoted to the stress relief and the ease of the radiating headache. So my non-scientific point of view is, have massages regularly because stress leads to all kinds of poor health complications!

Until next time…have a massage!

Pants or Dress? How about both!

What does one do when you really want to wear a dress, but the temperatures outside are in the single digits?  I will do almost anything for fashion, but I had a few things to do before meeting Em for a glass of wine, and I didn’t want to freeze!

Sylish Two: Dress over Pants

Dresses being worn over pants is a trend that crept up last fall, and I am happy it did!  It allows a fashionable ladies, such as myself, to extend the wear of her dresses into a season that it might be a bit too cold to comfortably wear normally.

Here, I cstdresspantBhose to pair a simple jersey dress over leather skinny jeans, which are also a trend this season.  I loved the contrast in textures, which added dimension to the outfit.  I threw on a leopard cardigan, which added more interest to a more monotone outfit.  After all, adding that third piece, especially when it is a piece of interest, always elevates the look.

I also added a pop of color, with my shoes.  They are a two-tone pair of brown pumps that matched my clothes great, but with a bright turquoise toe cap!  The shoes were actually a DIY project after Is2dresspantC scuffed the toe of one of these shoes so badly I thought I would have to part with them.  Instead, I got creative, and love the result!

I loved the way the look came out (and so did Em), so if you find yourself going out this winter on when its a little too cold to rock that dress you are lusting to wear, try throwing a pair of pants on under it!  Best of both words!

The Wear it All Challenge!

IStylishTwo am not a minimalist. Not one little inch of me.  My wardrobe is excessive, and I have more shoes than anyone could ever possibly need.  Like triple digits on the shoes, and there is a good chance the first number is not a 1.  Its better if I don’t count though, right?  That way no one really knows now many there are, and I get less judgmental looks at the many dollar signs that have gone into creating my fashion collection….please don’t judge the photos of my messy closet either!

This is what has lead me to be challenged by a couple of people in my life, Em included, to wear everything I have, and if I don’t, it has to go.  Why?  Because we all get stuck in fashion ruts, where we find ourselves wearing a small portion of our clothes and StylishTwoshoes frequently, leaving most of it to just hang lonely in our closets.  My life is a little crazy these days, so I have absolutely fallen victim to this.  I have been dressing more for ease, with less creativity.  Even some clothes I truly love have been worn less because I grab what is on top of the pile.  A challenge like this is exactly what I need to revive my style!  It also *may* lead to me weeding out things in my wardrobe. Items I struggle to work in, that don’t fit well, or I no longer enjoy wearing.  So in 2015, I will wear everything in my closets!  Yes, that is pleural on purpose. There are two closets….

StylishTwo Now, I have already given up hope that I can remember what I have been wearing, so I have decided to use the iphone app Stylebook, which lets me photograph my clothes, and organize it into a calendar, so not only do I know what I wore, but I even know when I wore it!

Stylebook Closet organization

Expect to see many photos of my clothes, and shoes on Instagram and here…and just to add to the fun, I challenge anyone who reads this, to wear everything in their closet in 2015 as well!

What can you do to save time and still be fashionable?

I am an Architect, and I own my own business. So this post goes out to all you professional women, busy moms, and women who just don’t like to shop! A few months ago, my sister, a beautiful stay at home mom, introduced me to a company called Stitch Fix! As a business owner and professed work-o-holic, I find I don’t have time to go shopping. I also find, that living in Maine, can make shopping just a hair more challenging then some other areas of the country. So when my sister, who finds that having two minutes to yourself to shop just never happens, tried Stitch Fix and loved it, I just had to jump on board.  I read the positive and negative reviews, and decided to sign up.  First, you get to fill out a style profile.  They show you a series of images and outfits to rank how much you like them. Then you choose your size, fit categories, and the amount you want to spend on certain types of items. For me, I love big, wild statement jewelry, so I only want to spend a little bit, and get a lot of fun, flashy pieces.  However, on a blouse that I’m going to wear frequently for work, I’m willing to spend a little more for quality that’s going to last. My latest “fix” included the scarf below. I love scarves!

IMG_3934

You pay a $20 style fee to set up your first “fix”. If you like anything from your “fix” and decide to keep it, the $20 goes towards that. I think that’s only fair. And if you decide not to keep anything, you’re only out $20. You can set the frequency of the fix to once, monthly, bi-monthly or seasonal. So then I just had to wait, in all my excitement, to get my first fix!  They send you 5 items with a lovely little style guide on how to wear your items, and a price list. There is even a personalized note from your stylist in the top right corner. This week I got my 5th “fix.” For the first two fixes I had different stylists, but I’ve had the same stylist for the last 3 “fixes.” These have been all of my favorites! She has truly nailed my style!

IMG_3947

Now I get to try on these “new fashions” in the comfort of my own home, without having to go anywhere.  They take my style into consideration, but they send me pieces I would not find on my own, or maybe would never have thought to try on.  Some brands like 41 Hawthorn and Just Black even have exclusive lines only for Stitch Fix!

IMG_3334

The Pros and Cons:

Cost: Yes, you might be able to find something from your fix online for a lesser cost. However, I want you to keep in mind you didn’t have to go out and find it, or mail it to yourself, and you may never have found it on your own.  So keep in mind, that although you are “paying for the clothes” you are really paying for someone to do the leg work for you. My time is valuable, I think it’s worth the extra cost.

Feasibility: If you keep all 5 items you get a whole box discount! Well I’ve gotten 5 fixes and I have yet to keep all 5 items.  One box had 5 amazing things, but the cost of each item was high and I couldn’t fit it into my budget that time around. This last box I got, I loved everything, but one item had a fit problem and unfortunately there is no discount on keeping 4 items.

Ease: I mentioned above how easy it is get get your fix, now i’d like to end with how easy it is to keep and return your items.  The online system allows you to check through the five items you got.  You select if you are going to keep it and then you evaluate whether or not the cost, fit, style, and like were too much, just right, or too little. Seriously, does anyone ever check that box! Then you can leave a note for your stylist. I asked my stylist to resend me an item in another fix. Luckily for me, they still had it, and she shipped it out to me again. You can also comment on shape, fit, color, style and link your profile to Pinterest where your stylist can see any of the stylish things you have saved there! Once you’ve decided what you are keeping and what you are sending back, you click check out, you get your $20 style fee credited to whatever you kept, you throw the items you are returning in the self paid envelop that they give you, and you put it in the mailbox to go back within 3 days of receiving your “fix”. Easy as can be!

So check it out next time you are feeling frustrated with your wardrobe, lacking time to go shopping, or just want someone else to suggest some fashions to you! So stay tuned, my outfit post for next week is from my latest Stitch Fix!

Cheers and Happy 2015 ~ Em

OOD: Mad for Plaid!

In the glorious northeast, plaid is a fashion staple.  It’s warm, functional, and of course, easy to wear.  Thankfully, lately it has also a fashion movement.  One does not have to think that the only way to wear plaid is to play it down, though!

Styilish Two Plaid OOD

Here, I coupled a brightly colored, plaid, flannel shirt with a bright pencil skirt.  Then added some amazing ombre Aldo heels, and a great statement necklace.  Plaid can pretty easily be dressed up!

In with the New! Happy Stylish 2015!

Out with the old, in with the new on New Years! There is just so much to leave behind, and so many wonderful new things happening in 2015. The highest on my list here is, of course, StylishTwo!

NYE Fashion

I have always loved NYE, after all, it is a day dedicated to celebrating the last 365 days, and dreaming about what you want in the coming 365. It is also a time  for when all that glitters and gleams is absolutely in fashion, and I do love me some  sparkles.  I decided this year, I needed to celebrate in style. The year of 2014 was full of ups and downs, and some very major life changes. I survived it all. I’m happy, healthy, and ready for a fantastic year of stiletto heels, world travel, love, laughter, and finally my degree in anesthesia!

My NYE veStylishTwo NYEnue this year was a party in Portland hosted at Grace, which is a gorgeous restaurant in a historic church, with all the event’s proceeds going to a local food bank.  After all, if you are going to celebrate, why not do it for a good cause?

I went subtle and classy with my fashion, wearing a silk Calvin Klein dress, great pumps with a glitter toe cap that wouldn’t kill my feet, and a metallic clutch.

Em was home sick for the event, so my good friend C joined me for the event!

Happy 2015 everyone! Cheers to the best year ever!
